The Five Stages of Violent Crime and the AOI Triangle

“An overwhelming majority of violence comes with instructions on how to avoid it.”
AOI Triangle
Here is yet another excellent article from Marc MacYoung of No Nonsense Self-Defense:

Five Stages of Violent Crime

Here’s a summary:

The Five Stages of Violent Crime

  1. Intent – A person is mentally prepared to commit a violent crime.
  2. Interview – The criminal decides if the target is safe to attack.
  3. Positioning – The criminal puts himself in a place where he can successfully attack you.
  4. Attack – The criminal commits to using force or the threat of force.
  5. Reaction – How the criminal feels about what he has done, i.e., how the criminal might further escalate the attack if his initial goals (e.g. robbery, empowerment) are or are not met.

A related concept:

The AOI Triangle

  • Ability – Does the person have the ability to attack you?
  • Opportunity – Does this person have the opportunity to attack you?
  • Intent – Is he in a mental place where using violence to get what he wants makes sense to him?

“The fastest way to figure out if you are in potential danger is to look for these three elements.”

Also read the counter to the Five Stages, the Pyramid of Personal Safety.

Marc and Dianna MacYoung seem much more rooted in reality than most every other self-proclaimed expert on violence. They are not alarmist reactionaries intent on making you feel like everyone in the world has the potential to rob and murder you. What I really like in particular about their writing is that any discussion of self-defense always returns to use of force considerations and the legal and psychological repercussions of resorting to violence.

Using Training Room 2

academy_04Students are welcome to use Training Room 2 downstairs if no class is being held in it. However, please keep these guidelines in mind:

  • Please be mindful of others in the room and respect their training space.
  • Please keep unsupervised training safe and within reason.
    No sparring.
  • Children should not be left unsupervised.
  • Please keep the room tidy. If you use equipment, please put it away neatly when finished.
  • If you use the Wavemaster heavy bags, please pull them away from the wall. Keeping the bag against the wall prevents it from moving around, but it also damages the wall and floorboards!

Having a second training room is a great step up from the old location, so please use it!

The Groin Strike Is Not Just a Punchline

Youch.
Groin strikes are a bit of a running gag about Krav Maga. It may seem we have a fixation, and, admittedly, there are few things funnier than seeing someone biffed in the crotch.

Juvenile giggling aside, there’s a reason why groin strikes are barred from combat sports: they’re fight enders. Even with protection, a strike to the groin can completely incapacitate the strongest of fighters. Doubt it? Seen this?

Krav Maga: Techniques vs. Concepts

Bricked
In the post on headlocks, I posed a question regarding the overwhelming number of submissions available to a skilled grappler in that position:

Should we learn unique techniques to counter each attack?

At first glance, this might seem appropriate. Chokes, elbow locks, shoulder locks, knee locks… Surely these all require different responses, right? Many self-defense and grappling systems do just this and have very, very large catalogs of techniques to address very specific possibilities. There may even be multiple techniques for each nuanced scenario.

While there are certainly many not-to-be-named systems and instructors that teach laughable techniques that could get you killed if you attempted them, there are a greater number of martial arts that—if taught and trained well—are technically sound and proven effective. However, most all of these arts require years to develop proficiency. Even then, there’s the risk of “analysis paralysis” because you have too many techniques to choose from when you must react without hesitation under stress. [Read more...]

Headlock on the Ground: Not Just for Untrained Meatheads

Hey, stop squeezin' meh head!
When we introduce Defense against Headlock from the Side in Level 1, we explain that there is not an immediate life-threatening danger as there is with chokes. The headlock is not a choke; rather, the attacker’s goal may be to:

  1. Not actual mean you any physical harm but grab you like a childish idiot. (Boy will he be surprised when you rocket a forearm into his groin!)
  2. Hold your head in place so as to punch it.
  3. Hold your head in place so his buddy can punch it.
  4. Yank you down to the ground by your head.

Assuming you either don’t know the Level 5 Defense against Headlock from the Side: Being Spun Inward or weren’t able to pull it off, it’s Attacker Goal #4 that leads to our Level 3 headlock on the ground defenses. These defenses address the basic position and the minor variations of it.
