In our last cycle through the Level 1 curriculum, I introduced a BJJ-based routine that I hope both got bodies warmed up as well as reinforced the techniques and movements of the system. It also lays the groundwork (pun intended) for more advanced concepts.

A good drill is not only a realistic simulation but a way to train a broad base of skills. Last night we did a warm-up that was to simulate sport-style training in Krav Maga with timed rounds and similar work capacity demands. Today we did a drill that was to simulate a self-defense scenario.
Questions regarding the legal ramifications of self-defense and use of force come up occasionally in class. We instructors try to state explicitly that we are not legal authorities, and we can only equip students with the tools to keep themselves and their loved ones safe; how they use them must be defined by the circumstances and the law as it applies to those circumstances. Bas Rutten, a good friend of Krav Maga, has teamed with Cartoon Network for the channel’s new health and wellness PSA campaign called Get Animated. In it, Bas encourages children—as only he can—to get off the couch and blast out some push-ups.
(This really makes me want to do Bas’ All-Around Workout right now…!)
