Advanced Class Fight Gear Reminder

Just a reminder to everyone attending the Krav Maga Advanced class that you should always bring all your fight gear. Even when we are not running the sparring curriculum specifically, we will often include fighting in skills training and drills. If you do not have your gear, you cannot participate in class.

If you are new to the Advanced class and have not yet purchased the required gear, please do so before attending.

Gear: Rogue Fitness P3 Pull-Up Bar

Rogue Fitness P3 Pull-Up Bar
The first step is admitting you have a problem, right? Well, I have a problem. I’m a gear hoarder. Workout gear, drum gear, computer gear… it doesn’t matter; I have a lot of hobbies, they all have gear, and I like gear. Now that I’ve admitted it, do I have to do something about it? Or is the acknowledgement the thing? At any rate, here is the first in a new category of posts dedicated to GEAR.

We do a lot of push-based movements in Krav Maga: punching, push-ups, burpees… To avoid shoulder, neck, and posture issues, it’s important to also do a lot of pulling. Enter The Almighty Pull-Up.

Rogue Pull-Up Bar

Add another plate! This thing ain't comin' out the wall!

This isn’t a write-up about pull-ups, though, it’s about the device on which you do them! I had several different bars in my old house. None were ideal in that they were either not high enough or a bit questionable in the “structural integrity” department. For my new place, I decided to splurge on an industrial-strength bar rig. I wanted something that would yank the whole garage down before it loosened from the wall. My search began and ended where it usually does, at Rogue Fitness, my favorite emporium of kickassery.

I received and installed the Rogue P3 Pull-up System a couple weeks ago. The installation was straightforward, and I have no doubt about that thing ever coming out of the studs. It is a beast. The quality is on par with all the other Rogue gear I’ve accumulated, and the finish feels great and looks awesome.

Finally, weighted pull-ups without fear of death by structural collapse!

New Accessory for 360° Defense Training?

Your training partner will love you for strapping a pair of these on!

I originally set out to post this as a gag, but the more I think about it the more I like the Strong Arm / Ulnar Press. The video is laughable (so help me if I ever see kick defenses like this!), but I think the Strong Arm is a great idea for law enforcement.

Stay with me, but I’m going to attempt to draw a parallel to Krav Maga…

Oh boy, here we go »

Hand Protection Required

If only Sensei Kreese had worn hand protection, Karate Kid II might have turned out differently for him.

If only Sensei Kreese had worn hand protection, Karate Kid II might have turned out differently for him.

Effective immediately, all students will be required to wear hand protection when training combatives. Boxing gloves, MMA-style gloves, and handwraps are all acceptable. This is for two very important reasons:

  1. Safety. If you are striking a pad with even moderate force, there is a chance you could injure your hands or wrists. This is particularly true for new students who have not yet developed the technique nor the tolerance for heavy punching. However, even experienced students can be at risk for injury on a well-worn tombstone pad or when their typically good technique degrades under stress and fatigue.
  2. Hygiene. Regardless of your training experience, your knuckles will invariable get scuffed when slamming them into leather. This will leave blood on the pads—shared equipment. (Also note: If you ever do get blood on the equipment or the mats, bring it to an instructor’s attention immediately so that we may properly sanitize them.)

If you are a new student, the school does have “loner” gloves for you to use until you have your own.

If you choose to wear handwraps, please put them on before class begins so that there are no delays in training. For those new to handwraps, we do have a video tutorial in the works to teach the basics of wearing them. Stay tuned.

We appreciate your cooperation.
