There will be a basic gun defense seminar on Saturday, April 6, from 1:00 to 3:30pm. This course will cover defenses and disarms for basic hand gun threats. The seminar is open to all adult students and the general public. The cost is $65 and space is limited to 20 participants.
***The 6:00pm Friday All Levels class and the 8:30am Saturday Scenarios class before the seminar will cover all basic combatives required for the gun defenses. It is highly recommended you attend one of these classes if you are participating in the seminar. This will allow us to devote the entire seminar to the defenses!***

I can’t begin to help you with this carjacking scenario…
Carjacking: Assailant with Handgun in the Front Passenger Seat
Note that we’ll again be limiting variables so that we can actually cover the base case fairly well in 60 minutes!

For your health, please bring your own balaclava. No sharing.

We’ll need volunteers of vehicles in which to train, so please be sure to clean out the three weeks of Burger King* trash in your passenger seat. Or don’t; that might dissuade someone from wanting your car… (Class dismissed?!)

* I almost wrote “McDonald’s” but realized it could be misunderstood.
We spend a lot of training time repeatedly drilling the smallest technical aspects of individual defenses against gun threats. Below is a quick punch list of notes for considerations surrounding the attack and the defense, which are every bit as important as the physical techniques.
If you are holding the attacker at the point of his own gun (and there could possibly be legal implications with this), it is even more important that you follow police commands. Always try to see from the police perspective: They received a call about a gun attack, and now they’ve arrived to see someone holding a gun. You probably look like the bad guy. Make sure when you call 9-1-1 to describe both yourself and the attacker to help alleviate as much doubt as possible.
Answer police questions as directly and accurately as possible, emphasizing that you believed that your life was in danger. If you get the sense that the police aren’t believing you or that their questions are implying you’re the bad guy, shut up and get a lawyer.

I completed Phase C (Level 3 instructor training) last week at the Krav Maga Worldwide National Training Center in West LA. I was privileged to train with incredible people and absorbed so much, as you must in seven full days of total immersion! I learned many new things and many new ways of doing old things. I think we did more weapons training than anything else, which was an unexpected treat. I’m excited to share with everyone—right after I take a little time to organize my notes, decompress, and heal some dings and dents!
Big thanks to my most excellent Phasemates. If you ever find yourself in their parts of the world, be sure to check out their schools:
Also a big thank-you to our instructors Kelly Campbell, AJ Draven, and David Bluestein. With such a small, talented group [and me
] to work with, the best of the best practically gave us a week-long private lesson. They genuinely wanted to help us improve in all aspects as Krav Maga instructors, and I undoubtedly feel stronger in my technical and teaching skills. And despite the lingering soreness, I’m honored to have been their demo dummy for the week!
Thanks certainly need also go to all those at the Academy who helped me train, especially Brian, Marc, and—of course—Danelle, who had to deal with spinning back kicks and my obsessing over programming for months on end! Only 282 days until Expert Series I!
