Edged Weapon Attacks
This is a big one to tackle in a 1-hr class, so, as usual, we will be limiting variables and focusing on a few key aspects.

Imi poised to punish the assailant not for brandishing a weapon, but for sporting that windbreaker without irony.
Great turnout last week! Let’s keep it up!

Nobody wins in a knife fight
The classes will cover basic knife concepts from the Filipino martial arts system Modern Arnis Jujitsu as applied to our Krav Maga principals.
It is not necessary that you attend these classes before the seminar, but doing so will give you a very different perspective! I promise you’ll be much more cognizant of how good your defenses must be.
***Please note that these classes are intended for educational purposes only and are meant to familiarize you with the dynamic and unpredictable nature of knives. Read the use of force post and the Pocket Knife FYI.
Check out this video of one helluva frenzied knife attack simulation. Warning: While only simulated, this video is very disturbing. It is NSFW and definitely not appropriate for children.

Don’t forget: Basic Knife Defense Seminar this Saturday!
For more terror, watch IFC’s Favorite Movie Knife Scenes!
There will be a Krav Maga Basic Knife Defense seminar at the Academy on Saturday, Dec 3rd, from 2pm – 5pm. The cost is $65 and includes forearm guards!
All levels of students are welcome to attend. Space is limited. Contact the Academy or sign up below to reserve a spot.
I completed Phase C (Level 3 instructor training) last week at the Krav Maga Worldwide National Training Center in West LA. I was privileged to train with incredible people and absorbed so much, as you must in seven full days of total immersion! I learned many new things and many new ways of doing old things. I think we did more weapons training than anything else, which was an unexpected treat. I’m excited to share with everyone—right after I take a little time to organize my notes, decompress, and heal some dings and dents!
Big thanks to my most excellent Phasemates. If you ever find yourself in their parts of the world, be sure to check out their schools:
Also a big thank-you to our instructors Kelly Campbell, AJ Draven, and David Bluestein. With such a small, talented group [and me
] to work with, the best of the best practically gave us a week-long private lesson. They genuinely wanted to help us improve in all aspects as Krav Maga instructors, and I undoubtedly feel stronger in my technical and teaching skills. And despite the lingering soreness, I’m honored to have been their demo dummy for the week!
Thanks certainly need also go to all those at the Academy who helped me train, especially Brian, Marc, and—of course—Danelle, who had to deal with spinning back kicks and my obsessing over programming for months on end! Only 282 days until Expert Series I!

Knives are scary. Anyone who’s done even the most cursory training with them can attest to this. Maybe this is why they make for such great entertainment. For the random post of the week: “Our 15 favorite movie knife scenes (with video)” from the Independent Film Channel.
Warning: These are movie knife fights. The clips are unedited and extremely graphic.
I’m of course happy to see both Tommy Lee Jones knife fights made the list. (I watched and playacted the Under Siege scene countless times as a 12-year-old!) And the Eastern Promises linoleum knives… The Remar/Carradine fight in The Long Riders is a great one I hadn’t seen before, and the Kill Zone and The Man from Nowhere scenes are now new favorites (extra credit for the karambit).
The I Saw the Devil scene was one I had forgotten about—more like blocked from recent memory. I do remember remarking when I first saw it that it was one of the most terrifyingly realistic knife attacks in film. The vicious brutality of that one will give you nightmares…
Any of your favorites not make the IFC’s list?
