Easy Like Sunday Morning

02.04.22 By Josh Leave a Comment

MORNING KRAV MAGA IS BACK!!!

Only it will be Wednesday, not Sunday, and anything but easy. Rick Gershberg and Josh Passell will lead classes Wednesday mornings from 9-10, focusing on drills and combatives to encourage the crouching tiger inside you to stretch its legs, the hidden dragon (this being morning) to show off its combustible breath. Rick and Josh have been taking and leading classes at the Academy for years–years–and are only too happy to share what they’ve learned with beginners and experts alike. Drop the kids off at school, tell your boss you’re “working from home”–whatever it takes–and head on over. Wednesday morning at 9 is the time, and the MacDonald Academy of Martial Arts is the place.

If They Outlaw Shopping Carts…

02.05.16 By Josh Leave a Comment

Only outlaws will have shopping carts:

This is security-camera footage of a real terrorist attack as it happened. You can learn the tragic details by searching “Beit Horon” (the town where the attack occured) in recent news stories. But it’s the quick thinking of the man with the cart that I’d like to note now. A cashier in the store, he wasn’t just protecting himself; there were other people inside. Who among us would have responded so quickly and so bravely? Maybe more than we think.

All of our training, from fundamental to advanced, teaches aggression, going on the offensive. If attacked with a knife, and with no avenue of retreat, we burst forward. One arm shields against the attack, the other blasts the strongest knockout punch we can muster. But we are also taught that we have layers of defense. The outer layer is to get away, run, vacate the premises. If that’s not possible, use anything at hand to foil the attack—a bag, a stick, a shopping cart. Only when we’re reduced to hand-to-hand combat do we employ the knife defense we practice so assiduosly (or so we had better). And even then we might expect to get cut.

Krav’s defenses are drawn from direct experience. If the nature of an attack changes over time, the response evolves to deal with it. But the philosophy is consistent—attack the attack. Be explosive. Shopping cart or floor mop, broken beer bottle or cans of cling peaches in heavy syrup, flung like Randy Johnson in a foul mood (to be redundant), the store clerk had his choice of weapons (none better than the one he chose).

But so would we if we were in his position.

*** 04.25.15 UPDATE ***
Change of plans for this morning’s Krav Maga Scenarios class due to MIA weaponry. (We’ll try again next week.) We took an impromptu detour to the ground. As promised, here’s a video showing the submission sequence we trained.

Arm Bar Defenses & Escapes

03.26.15 By Patrick Leave a Comment

What’s the best way to escape an arm bar? Don’t get caught in one, of course! While avoidance and early defense are always preferred, sometimes stuff goes south and you find yourself in quite the rough spot. Below are the defenses we trained in Fight Class Wednesday night.

If we’re constantly training to get off the ground and back to our feet as quickly as possible, why is the straight arm bar from guard in the Krav Maga curriculum in the first place? You may never consciously decide to “hunt” for an arm bar while fighting on the ground (and realistic training would show that you shouldn’t), but you may find that an attacker happens to fall right into the perfect position for one, and this is one hell of a counterattack to neutralize the threat. More importantly, MMA, BJJ, and submission wrestling have practically become mainstream sports. Basic groundfighting techniques are being trained by average people, and even couch jockeys can call out submissions while watching a cage fight. This means that it is increasingly likely that the person attacking you might have even a cursory knowledge of very dangerous submissions. By being versed in them too, you can anticipate them and avoid putting yourself in a position of disadvantage. If you do get caught in one, you know the principles of how they work, which will aid in your escape.

Let’s first briefly address the attack itself. The straight arm bar from guard is a fundamental submission in all grappling styles. Setups vary from art to art and even from fighter to fighter, but the principles remain constant: the elbow joint is hyperextended by isolating the arm, placing a fulcrum on the elbow, and pulling the end of the lever (the wrist). Here’s basically what we’re talking about:

But seriously:

You won’t need an escape technique at all if you can nullify the attacker’s opportunity to break your arm. Here are the most basic positional defenses for those with little to no groundfighting experience. (There are nuances and exceptions to almost every point once you gain more experience.) When in an attacker’s guard:

  1. Keep your posture upright. Don’t let the attacker pull your head down, clamping it to his chest. Keep your head roughly in vertical alignment with your hips, but not so far back that you can be swept backwards.
  2. Maintain a solid base by keeping your hips low and your knees wide. Be ready to counter the attacker’s push/pull.
  3. Don’t let your arms cross the attacker’s centerline, i.e., don’t let your right arm move towards the attacker’s right hip/shoulder.
  4. Keep both of your arms either inside or outside the attacker’s legs, never one arm inside and one outside.
  5. Don’t extend your arms toward the attacker’s head. Try to keep your elbows tight to your body and south of the attacker’s hips.
  6. Don’t overextend strikes or radically shift your weight to throw heavy combatives.
  7. While it is vital to keep these technical points in mind, don’t get cute with guard passes. Strike to neutralize the threat, break guard, get to your feet protected, get to a safe place.

And now the escapes?! Yes! These are not the only escape techniques in the world of grappling, and they are not part of the Krav Maga Worldwide curriculum. I believe they are an excellent starting point for further study and training. Get on the mat!
