The Repetitive Nature of Training Is *Not* Killing Me

Subtitle: Krav Homework Sucks a Lot Less Than Trigonometry

There’s a very important but sometimes neglected concept in learning self-defense. Really, it applies to developing any new skill, be it Krav Maga, playing piano, or knitting. It’s practice, or as we like to refer to it to make it sound more intense: training.

Krav Maga as a system is designed to quickly build proficiency in students and provide them with tools that remain effective under stress and/or from a position of disadvantage that will neutralize a threat and keep them safe.

27 Ninjas Questions

03.23.10 By Patrick 8 Comments

27 Ninjas. Well, okay, four plus Haru...“What if I am walking down a dark alley with $20 bills hanging out of my pockets and I’m attacked by 27 Ninjas with Uzis? What do I do?”

I just read this and wanted to share:
“What-If-Monkeys” by Marc MacYoung

The article author says a lot and says it well, so I don’t want to add to the general topic. I do, however, have a few things to say regarding what-ifs as they specifically relate to Krav Maga:

One of the main reasons I believe in Krav Maga, as someone who both trains in it and teaches it, is that it applies as few techniques/solutions as possible to as many scenarios as possible. For example, we often make defenses based solely on the angle of an attack rather than the specifics of it (is it a fist, foot, weapon, etc.?). This speeds both the training time and the reaction time to a surprise attack by limiting the available options (see also Hick’s Law). That said, the system doesn’t “force” techniques to work in situations they clearly won’t. While the tools in the Krav Maga toolbox are both few and versatile by design, the system doesn’t claim to have a set of secret super moves that will work against any opponent in any circumstance. Maintaining situational awareness, training your reflexive responses, and training to see within the fight will aid you best in most scenarios.

As trainees in a “reality-based” system, we need to address both general and specific scenarios, and obviously train them as realistically as possible. So, I post this not to discourage anyone from asking any question. (Nor am I insinuating that too many 27-Ninjas-type questions are being asked in class!) We love exploring scenarios with students when appropriate, especially when we see them “get it”. It’s important to understand, though, that:

Violence is extremely mutable. Those mutations occur from situation to situation and second to second depending on circumstances. As such, attempting to micromanage and have exact pre-planned responses to every possible scenario is unrealistic. Such an attitude hinders mental flexibility and inhibits the responder’s ability to adapt to changing circumstances. This inability increases the danger to the would-be responder.

Pre-Workout Stretching Ideas

03.18.10 By Patrick 5 Comments

In a recent post, we posed a question about organized stretching as part of the warm-up. Some like it, some don’t, but most important is that everyone is stretching safely and effectively. Most athletes, expert coaches, and sports scientists agree that static stretching before working out is at best ineffective and at worst counterproductive or even dangerous. (Do some additional research on your own, but read this article for one example.) While static stretching is very important after a workout, it’s dynamic/ballistic stretching that will best prepare your body for some hard work.

The video below is a recent post from Matt Wichlinski. In it, he shows dozens of different warm-up movements and stretches, many of which should look pretty familiar. This guy’s a total monster and is doing some really neat training at his gym The Strength Shop.

[BE ADVISED: Matt’s got some music playing in the background that contains explicit lyrics.]

Hand Protection Required

If only Sensei Kreese had worn hand protection, Karate Kid II might have turned out differently for him.
If only Sensei Kreese had worn hand protection, Karate Kid II might have turned out differently for him.

Effective immediately, all students will be required to wear hand protection when training combatives. Boxing gloves, MMA-style gloves, and handwraps are all acceptable. This is for two very important reasons:

  1. Safety. If you are striking a pad with even moderate force, there is a chance you could injure your hands or wrists. This is particularly true for new students who have not yet developed the technique nor the tolerance for heavy punching. However, even experienced students can be at risk for injury on a well-worn tombstone pad or when their typically good technique degrades under stress and fatigue.
  2. Hygiene. Regardless of your training experience, your knuckles will invariable get scuffed when slamming them into leather. This will leave blood on the pads—shared equipment. (Also note: If you ever do get blood on the equipment or the mats, bring it to an instructor’s attention immediately so that we may properly sanitize them.)

If you are a new student, the school does have “loner” gloves for you to use until you have your own.

If you choose to wear handwraps, please put them on before class begins so that there are no delays in training. For those new to handwraps, we do have a video tutorial in the works to teach the basics of wearing them. Stay tuned.

We appreciate your cooperation.

Developing Your “When”

03.02.10 By Patrick 6 Comments

krav_countdown
One concept that sets Krav Maga apart from most other self-defense systems is that we consistently train from a position of disadvantage. The belief is that all techniques must work whether we are prepared or not, as most situations requiring us to defend ourselves occur suddenly and with little warning. If we only trained from a prepared position (our fighting stance), we would either be delayed to action or—much worse—freeze when caught off guard.

Part of our training involves practicing both offensive and defensive techniques from what we call passive or neutral position. Beyond developing lighting-fast reaction, not much forethought must go into defensive techniques; the decision to act has been made for us by the attacker. Launching a preemptive assault, however, is a very different situation. We must consider the how?, the when?, and the what then? (the immediate and longer-term consequences) of such an action.
