Does Practice Make Perfect In Sports?

07.20.12 By Patrick Leave a Comment

Only 9,999 to go...
Here’s an interesting article that relates to my posts on practice and the GTG method:

Does Practice Make Perfect In Sports?

The next time you feel like your skills have plateaued, take a rough tally of the number of hours you’ve spent practicing them. Close to 10,000 yet?!

GTG for Krav Maga

05.25.12 By Patrick 3 Comments

I-40 Lens Grease
In an old post on practice and repetition, I mentioned a Pavel Tsatsouline method called Grease the Groove and gave some suggestions of what types of skills are well-suited to this type of training. I’d like to expand the scope of that original post a bit and discuss more of the how and why of GTG and where it can intersect with becoming a better Krav Maga practitioner.

The GTG method is explained in Pavel’s book The Naked Warrior, which focuses on developing maximal strength with bodyweight exercises through manipulations of tension and leverages. Recall from the practice post that the central concept of GTG is:

Specificity + frequent practice = success

Here’s the simplest possible example of how to use GTG: Set up a pull-up bar in your home or office (or select a proper structural support beam out back in the warehouse…). Every time you walk past it, do a sub-maximal set of pull-ups. Over the course of the day, you will easily rack up A LOT of pull-ups. Two of the biggest advantages of this approach are that you improve quickly due to the training volume and frequency, and you don’t need a dedicated workout time and place.

This seems straightforward enough, but there are right and wrong ways of employing GTG to maximize the success of your efforts.

The Five Stages of Violent Crime and the AOI Triangle

05.10.12 By Patrick 1 Comment

“An overwhelming majority of violence comes with instructions on how to avoid it.”
AOI Triangle
Here is yet another excellent article from Marc MacYoung of No Nonsense Self-Defense:

Five Stages of Violent Crime

Here’s a summary:

The Five Stages of Violent Crime

  1. Intent – A person is mentally prepared to commit a violent crime.
  2. Interview – The criminal decides if the target is safe to attack.
  3. Positioning – The criminal puts himself in a place where he can successfully attack you.
  4. Attack – The criminal commits to using force or the threat of force.
  5. Reaction – How the criminal feels about what he has done, i.e., how the criminal might further escalate the attack if his initial goals (e.g. robbery, empowerment) are or are not met.

A related concept:

The AOI Triangle

  • Ability – Does the person have the ability to attack you?
  • Opportunity – Does this person have the opportunity to attack you?
  • Intent – Is he in a mental place where using violence to get what he wants makes sense to him?

“The fastest way to figure out if you are in potential danger is to look for these three elements.”

Also read the counter to the Five Stages, the Pyramid of Personal Safety.

Marc and Dianna MacYoung seem much more rooted in reality than most every other self-proclaimed expert on violence. They are not alarmist reactionaries intent on making you feel like everyone in the world has the potential to rob and murder you. What I really like in particular about their writing is that any discussion of self-defense always returns to use of force considerations and the legal and psychological repercussions of resorting to violence.

Using Training Room 2

05.03.12 By Patrick

academy_04Students are welcome to use Training Room 2 downstairs if no class is being held in it. However, please keep these guidelines in mind:

  • Please be mindful of others in the room and respect their training space.
  • Please keep unsupervised training safe and within reason.
    No sparring.
  • Children should not be left unsupervised.
  • Please keep the room tidy. If you use equipment, please put it away neatly when finished.
  • If you use the Wavemaster heavy bags, please pull them away from the wall. Keeping the bag against the wall prevents it from moving around, but it also damages the wall and floorboards!

Having a second training room is a great step up from the old location, so please use it!

Advanced Class Fight Gear Reminder

04.04.12 By Patrick Leave a Comment

Just a reminder to everyone attending the Krav Maga Advanced class that you should always bring all your fight gear. Even when we are not running the sparring curriculum specifically, we will often include fighting in skills training and drills. If you do not have your gear, you cannot participate in class.

If you are new to the Advanced class and have not yet purchased the required gear, please do so before attending.
