Pad Work

09.30.10 By Patrick Leave a Comment

In our Krav Maga training, we often borrow methods from combat sports, perhaps none more than focus mitts and thai pads. We’re not boxers nor Thai fighters; we don’t need to develop as high a level of skill on pads. However, training this way develops our fundamentals of striking for self-defense—and it’s really, really fun.

Below are just a few videos that, when viewed, may inspire a sudden desire to hit stuff.

Unfortunately, things didn’t work out so well for Marcus Davis at UFC 118 in Boston. Here he is training with Mark DellaGrotte of Sityodtong:

Augmenting Krav Maga Training, Part II: Skills

08.05.10 By Patrick 2 Comments

Krav Boxing Gloves
In Part I, I discussed the merits of augmenting your Krav Maga training with a strength and conditioning—general physical preparedness—program. Let’s take a look at augmenting our current training with some specific physical preparedness in the form of skills work.

In a way, we’re already augmenting on a regular basis. The Bas Rutten Mixed Martial Arts Workout is something used by almost all Krav Maga Worldwide schools with great frequency. Marcus Kowal on Strikeforce Live

06.15.10 By Patrick 1 Comment

Krav Maga Worldwide black belt instructor Marcus Kowal will be fighting on the Strikeforce Live card tomorrow night, June 16th. From the Strikeforce website, it looks like the fight may be on the undercard, so it may not be televised on Showtime.

Danelle and I saw a glimpse of Marcus’ power and explosiveness as one of our Phase A instructors. And that was two years ago. He’s since been training professionally with the likes of Febricio Werdum, who fights none other than Fedor on June 26th.

Marcus relates Krav Maga and MMA on his blog:

This is the main difference yet similarity between Krav Maga and MMA:
I’m preparing for a battle—the battle that we at Krav Maga Worldwide hope to be able to avoid. Yet, I’m doing everything I can to prepare so that I can go home safe.

Here’s Marcus’ tongue-in-cheek prediction for the fight:

One Minute with Marcus: Prediction for his fight on June 16th

Good luck, Marcus!
