Back from Phase C with New Ways to Torture TEACH You

10.18.11 By Patrick 2 Comments

Patrick at Phase C
My Phasemates and me with our Day 6-7 instructor David Bluestein

I completed Phase C (Level 3 instructor training) last week at the Krav Maga Worldwide National Training Center in West LA. I was privileged to train with incredible people and absorbed so much, as you must in seven full days of total immersion! I learned many new things and many new ways of doing old things. I think we did more weapons training than anything else, which was an unexpected treat. I’m excited to share with everyone—right after I take a little time to organize my notes, decompress, and heal some dings and dents!

Big thanks to my most excellent Phasemates. If you ever find yourself in their parts of the world, be sure to check out their schools:

  • Jean-Francois Frenette and Kyle Glenn from MMA Academy in San Diego, CA
  • Dustin Hoffman from Krav Maga Training Centre Waterloo in Ontario, Canada
  • Richard Randquist Chung from Dojo 3 in Renton, WA
  • Lisa Rivera from Budo Ryu in San Luis Obispo, CA

Also a big thank-you to our instructors Kelly Campbell, AJ Draven, and David Bluestein. With such a small, talented group [and me ;)] to work with, the best of the best practically gave us a week-long private lesson. They genuinely wanted to help us improve in all aspects as Krav Maga instructors, and I undoubtedly feel stronger in my technical and teaching skills. And despite the lingering soreness, I’m honored to have been their demo dummy for the week!

Thanks certainly need also go to all those at the Academy who helped me train, especially Brian, Marc, and—of course—Danelle, who had to deal with spinning back kicks and my obsessing over programming for months on end! Only 282 days until Expert Series I!

Friday 09.30.11 – Joint Locks for Everyone!

09.30.11 By Patrick 7 Comments

2nd MAW trains keepers of the peace
I planned to do this at the end of our Choke & Grab Defense curriculum, but the schedule did not permit. For the Friday 9/30 All Levels class at 7pm, we will, by popular demand, be taking a quick detour back to blending Krav Maga and Modern Arnis Jujitsu. We will train some basic compliance techniques (i.e. “partner-aided joint mobility”) for scenarios where striking may not be warranted, such as shirt grabs, a finger in your face, escorting a rowdy person from a house party, etc. We can also workshop any other scenarios you have in mind.

There will be tapping a-plenty…!

Sep 2011 Level 1 Test–Congrats!

09.19.11 By Patrick 3 Comments

Congratulations to the students who endured the Level 1 test last Friday! All the instructors agreed that it was an outstanding group. Everyone looked really sharp, and all should be proud of their accomplishments.

Be sure to stop by the office this week for your scores and to get instructor feedback.

If you are planning to start training in the Advanced class, we will be beginning the sparring curriculum in a couple weeks. If you wish to participate, the approved sparring gear will be required. See Brian about getting it the next time you’re in.

Gear: Rogue Fitness P3 Pull-Up Bar

09.09.11 By Patrick 3 Comments

Rogue Fitness P3 Pull-Up Bar
The first step is admitting you have a problem, right? Well, I have a problem. I’m a gear hoarder. Workout gear, drum gear, computer gear… it doesn’t matter; I have a lot of hobbies, they all have gear, and I like gear. Now that I’ve admitted it, do I have to do something about it? Or is the acknowledgement the thing? At any rate, here is the first in a new category of posts dedicated to GEAR.

We do a lot of push-based movements in Krav Maga: punching, push-ups, burpees… To avoid shoulder, neck, and posture issues, it’s important to also do a lot of pulling. Enter The Almighty Pull-Up.

Rogue Pull-Up Bar
Add another plate! This thing ain't comin' out the wall!

This isn’t a write-up about pull-ups, though, it’s about the device on which you do them! I had several different bars in my old house. None were ideal in that they were either not high enough or a bit questionable in the “structural integrity” department. For my new place, I decided to splurge on an industrial-strength bar rig. I wanted something that would yank the whole garage down before it loosened from the wall. My search began and ended where it usually does, at Rogue Fitness, my favorite emporium of kickassery.

I received and installed the Rogue P3 Pull-up System a couple weeks ago. The installation was straightforward, and I have no doubt about that thing ever coming out of the studs. It is a beast. The quality is on par with all the other Rogue gear I’ve accumulated, and the finish feels great and looks awesome.

Finally, weighted pull-ups without fear of death by structural collapse!
