The Five Stages of Violent Crime and the AOI Triangle

05.10.12 By Patrick 1 Comment

“An overwhelming majority of violence comes with instructions on how to avoid it.”
AOI Triangle
Here is yet another excellent article from Marc MacYoung of No Nonsense Self-Defense:

Five Stages of Violent Crime

Here’s a summary:

The Five Stages of Violent Crime

  1. Intent – A person is mentally prepared to commit a violent crime.
  2. Interview – The criminal decides if the target is safe to attack.
  3. Positioning – The criminal puts himself in a place where he can successfully attack you.
  4. Attack – The criminal commits to using force or the threat of force.
  5. Reaction – How the criminal feels about what he has done, i.e., how the criminal might further escalate the attack if his initial goals (e.g. robbery, empowerment) are or are not met.

A related concept:

The AOI Triangle

  • Ability – Does the person have the ability to attack you?
  • Opportunity – Does this person have the opportunity to attack you?
  • Intent – Is he in a mental place where using violence to get what he wants makes sense to him?

“The fastest way to figure out if you are in potential danger is to look for these three elements.”

Also read the counter to the Five Stages, the Pyramid of Personal Safety.

Marc and Dianna MacYoung seem much more rooted in reality than most every other self-proclaimed expert on violence. They are not alarmist reactionaries intent on making you feel like everyone in the world has the potential to rob and murder you. What I really like in particular about their writing is that any discussion of self-defense always returns to use of force considerations and the legal and psychological repercussions of resorting to violence.

Two Excellent Sam Harris Essays on Self-Defense

03.29.12 By Patrick

I recently read these two essays and wanted to share because they relate so well to the principles of Krav Maga.

Krav Maga is not specifically mentioned, but the first essay most certainly draws from the same playbook.

“The Truth about Violence: 3 Principles of Self-Defense”

The second essay is apropos of all the groundfighting we’ve been training these past few weeks.

“The Pleasures of Drowning”

Level 1 Mini Test

09.07.11 By Danelle 1 Comment

Hello Folks!

There will be a review of the Level 1 curriculum Friday, Sept 9 and Saturday, Sept 10. On Friday, I will run a mini-test in the 7pm class. On Saturday, we’ll start with a heart-pumping workout and then slow it down to review specific techniques you are having trouble with and end with a Finisher.

Everyone will benefit from both classes and have a great workout. You’ll definitely get some conditioning to prepare you for the test on Sept 16.

Tony Blauer’s “Outside 90”

06.07.11 By Patrick 1 Comment

This is not Krav Maga, but there are very strong parallels, particularly with the elbow down, forearm in the neck clinch position we all love so dearly. As a reflexive defense and within the context of a “grabby” attacker, Tony Blauer’s Outside 90 is perfectly compatible with our training. Keep in mind, however, that Krav Maga takes a different tactic to defend against round punches. Because our punch defenses translate directly to defenses against edged weapons, we ideally don’t want the attacker’s arm glancing off in an uncontrolled manner. We want a strict 90° at the elbow because we don’t want the attacker’s hand being redirected down into the body. This also puts us in a better position to control and disarm the weapon. (Not being versed in the S.P.E.A.R. System, I don’t offer this as a critique, just a note of the differences evident in the short video.)

Disclaimers:

  1. Again, this is not Krav Maga.
  2. Tony’s language can be a bit salty.

February Burpee Challenge

01.19.11 By Danelle 8 Comments

UPDATE: Just a reminder that this starts tomorrow. It’s gonna be a great February!

Ok, so I’ve promised you some challenges to get us ready for Spring.

We are going to work on doing burpees consecutively. We’ll build ourselves up to do 28 burpees in a row with no breaks. We’ll use February to do it.

Beginning February 1, we will begin our challenge. On Feb 1, we’ll do 1 burpee. Feb 2, 2 burpees. Feb 3? Yep, 3 burpees. We build until Feb 28th, when we will perform 28 burpees, unbroken. This is done on your own time, not in class. If you miss a day, you must make up those burpees. So, if you miss Feb 14th burpees because you are with your sweetie, on Feb 15th you are doing 15 burpees + 14 burpees. I suggest you don’t get behind because it sucks.

In case you are wondering, this is what a burpee looks like:

Who’s in? Post in the comments if you are joining us in the burpee challenge!
